A material perspective on pupils’ experiences during museum education as a space for historical consciousness.

The PhD project explores how pupils experience historical objects during museum education at history museums and how these experiences contribute to the development of historical consciousness. In other words, this qualitative empirical study researches the entangled production of historical consciousness within museum education. The presentation will unfold how the project has explored pupils’ material experiences as a state of flux. This study aligns with the perspective that objects themselves possess an inherent power: “…a plea to regain something powerful about the magic of things themselves” (Dudley, 2012). Thus, the PhD project aims to develop an educational approach (Museumsdidaktik) that acknowledges and embraces pupils’ material experiences, thereby fostering their historical consciousness.
