SEASONS’S GREETINGS

Cathrine Baglo · 22. desember 2025

Saernieprieve 23 – Dávvirat Duiskkas – rahkan/goeven 2025

Another year of collaboration, companionship, and knowledge exchange is coming to an end. Many thanks to colleagues in Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Finland who in some way or the other have contributed to our project.

In 2025, Dávvirat Duiskkas concluded its series of workshops with public events hosted by the six Sámi museums or consolidated Sámi museum units in Norway. The next milestone will be the conference “Five Years Towards a New Museum Order” in Álta/Alta March 23-25(26), 2026. More information on the conference will follow.

Meanwhile we would like to send our greetings and share a small cavalcade of photos related to the workshops:

Šiõǥǥ rosttvid da leklvaž ođđ eeʹjj!

Lahkoe jåvlh jïh buerie orre jaepie!

Buorre javla ja buorre ådå jahke!

Buorit juovllat & buorre ođđajahki!

Frohe Weihnachten und ein glückliches Neues Jahr!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Gløshaug Church in Kråangke/Grong municipality. The church sits majestically on top of a steep hill and was built around 1690 but on the remains of an older stave church. Special masses were held in the church for the Saemieh (Sámi people) in the area and they were required to come. Photo: C. Baglo.
«Ut på tur aldri sur» (Norwegian saying meaning something like ‘A hike a day keeps the grump away’). The reward at the end of a long day. Colleagues enjoying the jacuzzi at Manndalen Sjøbuer but at the same time trying to cope with the wind. Elle (with the towel on her head) proved most resourceful. From the left: Ánne Mággá Wigelius (DVMV/ Tana and Varanger museumssida), Swantje Opitz (University of Göttingen), Elle Bals (RiddoDuottarMuseat), Emilie Bergland Bakklund (Árran Lule Sámi Center), Tone Elvebakk (Várdobáiki Sámi Center), and Bianca Röse-Martinussen (Várdobáiki Sámi Center). Sunneva Sætevik (Dávvirat Duiskkas/Norwegian Ministry of Culture) admiring Regine Juhl working on her famous mosaic wall at Juhl’s Silver Gallery. The wall started with an ancient fossil, which Regine found when she was a child. In 1993, she glued the fossil to the bottom of the wall at the back of the gallery. Since then, the artwork has grown. Photo: C. Baglo.

Colleagues carrying the legacy of Sámi artist John Andreas Savio (1902-1938). From the left Sarah-Nelly Friedland (Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen), Lisa Dunfjeld-Aagård (Saemien Sijte South Sámi Museum, sitting) and Elle Bals (RiddoDuottarMuseat). Not seen in the photo is Lisa’s plate of mashed swedes (LOL) with salted pork knuckle: C. Baglo.
Russevann (Ruõšš-čääʹcc, directly translated from Norwegian, it may have had another name), the last winter settlement on the Norwegian side of the Pasvik-sijdd.  Russevann was abandoned in 1826/27. After the border demarcation in 1826, all the Skolt/East Sámi winter settlements were located on the Russian side until the last one, which was abandoned in 1918. The settlement at Russevann is typical of the location of the Skolt/East Sami winter settlements, by a small lake away from the Pasvik River. Russevann was the siida’s communal settlement. The rest of the year the sijdd lived primarily in family settlements. The winter settlement was moved at intervals of 10-20 years in order not to over consume the reindeer pasture and firewood. Maria Looks (Museum Europäischer Kulturen) and Cathrine Baglo (Dávvirat Duiskkas) visited Russevann while waiting for their flights the last day of the workshop week (Sunday August 31). Photo: C. Baglo.
