Om sesjonen:
Session #207 – Participatory approaches in archaeology and museums 20 years on from the Faro Convention’s Article 12
In 2005, the Faro Convention of the Council of Europe connected heritage to human rights and declared that “everyone, alone or collectively, has the right to benefit from cultural heritage and to contribute to its enrichment.” Article 12, in particular, declared that everyone should be encouraged to participate in identifying, studying, interpreting, protecting, conserving and presenting heritage. While there certainly have been many success stories of participatory practices in archaeology and museums, scholarship has also highlighted that participatory practices tend to operate at the periphery of heritage organisations, often delivered by staff on temporary contracts and funded through fixed-term project grants. 20 years on from Faro, this session invites papers that explore:
• the challenges archaeological and museum organisations face in attempting to embed participatory practices at the core of their work
• methodological approaches to evaluating participatory practices and evidencing the positive and negative outcomes for participants, staff, organisations, local communities and the sector at large
• equitable and creative approaches to ensuring everyone has equal opportunity to participate in archaeology and museums, professionally or voluntarily, with particular reference to source communities, indigenous groups, disabled people and other demographic groups underrepresented in the sector
• innovative ways of positioning participatory practices at the core of sustainable business models for archaeological organisations and museums
